Nick Van Tiem is an Amsterdam-based photographer using his craft to explore new cultures and his own interpretations and misinterpretations of this world. His work ranges from very honest intimate documentary like portraiture to graphic narratives involving a distinctive colour palette. In search of elements that add to the story the kind of awe and curiosity that builds a scene, Nick’s photography is characterized by unusual faces, unique and otherworldly locations and powerful angles.

Your art is…

Turning a three-dimensional scene into a two-dimensional memory.


Name something you love, and why.

The excitement of scanning in a fresh batch of negatives. Sometimes after a single day of shooting, sometimes after months being on the road, the thrill of seeing those images appear on your screen never gets old.


Which professional success meant the most to you?

I guess the succes of my latest Broke Boys project. The story has been embraced by people all over the world, published on i-D and nominated for the Photo Vogue Festival. It has brought ‘my’ Broke Boys global fame, and has allowed us to continue our collaboration in the years to come.


Could you eat pancakes for a whole week?

Most. Definitely. Not.


Analog or Digital?

Analogue, one hundred thousand million procent.


Where do you go when you want to be with you?

The bouldering gym.


Tell us something about your education

I went to the Art School in the Hague, where I put in five years of hard work. It’s been an amazing time where I learned a lot about photography, but most importantly about myself.


A question that moves you right now

With more and more services becoming available digital, will we not lose sight of our fellow man? If any product can be delivered at your door after a few simple clicks, will we not lose those spontaneous moments we have outside of our homes? After to much screen-time I can start feeling disconnected from the ‘real’ world. I’m trying not to lose track and stay grounded, as the stories I discover out on the street are usually my main inspiration.


Why photography?

The medium is fast and gets you to places where otherwise you wouldn’t be. Being a photographer is the perfect excuse to go on an adventure.


What was the weirdest encounter, the craziest adventure or the most beautiful moment you experienced on a shoot?

My most recent goosebump moment was when we we’re shooting a campaign for a homeless people NGO. We casted this massive, beautiful, strong but rough Black man who had lived on the street for years. We had a tiny female director who wanted to get a shot of him floating in the water. Our talent was afraid of water so she went along with him, and held him into her arms until his breathing calmed down. The physical contrast of these two people together couldn’t have been bigger, yet at this moment one could not be without the other.


What is more important to you: Form or content?

It’s always a combination of both. One can not live without the other. The concept defines the form, and the form tells the concept.


What part of the human face is your favourite?

Eyes.

I know, very cliche.


Where does your inspiration live?

Outside.

What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I would probably die way to soon. Fear is there for a reason!
