New York City I 2020
Since the 2016 election, I have documented protests in New York and around the country. In this chapter, I am focusing on the protests that were ignited by the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and too many more. In May, when the protests erupted, the emotions were raw. Pain, frustration, sadness and anger were lying in the air. Over the course of the coming weeks and months, this feeling evolved, in joy, love and support for one another. However, pain, anger and sadness will not leave us until we have evolved as human beings and live in true equality. Anger, pain and sadness have been portrayed through a violent and negative lens by the media and in my work, I focus on the raw emotion, love and support.
Doerte’s distinctive, often raw imagery infused with painterly qualities derive from an emotional place. She finds a range of expression in analog and digital photography, depending on her subject matter. Her poetic take on life and the streets of New York are mostly captured with a softer focus, literally and expressively. In some cases she technically enhances softness to offset a sharper take. While staying in close proximity to her subjects, she finds the essence of the moment running the gamut from movement to stillness.
