Artist Shinya Itahana
Shanghai, China I 2016
The cityscape of Shanghai is changing rapidly. It is the most important industrial city in the People's Republic of China and one of the largest metropolises in the world. The population is about 23 million. In addition to the city centre with its 15 million inhabitants, Shanghai has numerous surrounding districts up to 50 km away with a further 8 million inhabitants. While the inner city has a high building density and a closed form of settlement, a rural, rather provincial settlement structure dominates in the outlying districts.
In his photography Itahana is exploring the complex relationships between places and life, such as architecture, urban space, people, and lifestyles, both domestically and internationally. His works were collected twice in the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Yamanashi, Japan and won numerous international accolades.
